Treo 650 – My new (expensive) Toy
Jun 12th, 2005 by William Jones
I purchased my Treo 650 just a little over two months ago. How did I ever live before without this phone? This is an awesome smartphone and I am unsure why I did not buy one sooner then I did, since I have been an avid Palm PDA user for the last decade. It’s hard to think of things that I can NOT do with my Treo 650.
Before I bought my Treo 650, I had a company phone (when I worked for Nextel Partners) which was a Motorola i90c. It was a no-nonsense, durable, and reliable phone. I hardly ever talked on the phone, and really only carried it just in case I needed to make an urgent call. I compare it to car insurance or a spare tire, which is great to have when you really need it. I think I never used the i90c that much because it did not have the features that I liked.
After having a free company phone for almost four years, the thought of searching for a good phone with a reasonable rate plan seemed like a chore with the overwhelming choices available. This time, if I was going to get a phone, I was going to go ALL-OUT and spare no expenses. I did not want a regular phone so the next choice were the smart phones. Because I had a lot of exposure the the Blackberry at Nextel Partner ,I looked at the Blackberry 7290. I also considered the Blackberry 7100g. Both had similar features as Web Browser, Bluetooth, email, QWERTY keyboard, SMS, ect. When I finally got around to checking the features of the Treo 650
, I was blown away. It had everything that the other phones had and a LOT more.
I could not believe the amount of features that was packed in to that little device. The Treo’s 320×320 resolution was the highest of the three. It also had a built-in VGA Camera with 2x Zoom and video capture. Even though I would not stop carrying my iPod, it had an MP3 player. The Treo’s 6 hour talk time towered over the both Blackberry’s 4 hour limit. And let’s not talk about Stand-by Time (even though I will). The 7100g and the 7290 had 8 and 9 days of stand-by while the Treo had a whopping 12.5 (count em’) days! I also realized that my initial assumptions about its Palm OS were wrong. The Treo 650 had a fully loaded Palm OS instead of a limited or partial OS that I thought it had. . Hey! (light bulb comes on) I could transfer ALL of my existing Palm applications from my Tungsten E PDA the the Treo! I realized at that moment that I was completely sold. I had to get this phone and no other phone would do. I actually use my phone quite a bit and (like the American Express card) I can not leave home without it. What kind of Geeky things have I done with my phone? Well, I have two Palm applications, an editor named Text and an FTP program called mFTP that allows me to do minor updates on my websites. I am interested to know what cool things others have used there Treo 650 (or mobile phone) to do.
